About Kemble:

Kemble in Gloucestershire is a large village in the south Cotswolds between Cirencester and Malmesbury. Kemble is the first village from the source of the River Thames, found just a couple of miles from the village centre at Trewsbury Mead.

There is archeological evidence suggests that there have been settlements in and around Kemble since prehistoric times with several burial locations around the village dating from the Iron Age through to Anglo-Saxon and medieval burials and the great Roman Frontier road, known as the Fosse Way runs through Kemble on its way to Corinium, modern day Cirencester.

Kemble village straddles the busy A429 with the older part of the village with a number of 19th century buildings and All Saints parish church on the east side and the modern mixture of private and local authority housing and the railway station and village pub on the west side. Besides the railway, Kemble has other services to offer villagers, there is a primary school, The Tavern- a local pub, Post Office and a local store.

Kemble became an important part of the railway system becoming a major junction on Isambard Kingdom Brunel's railway line from Swindon to the west and the branch lines from Cirencester and Tetbury, and is still important for passengers travelling to or from Cirencester and the surrounding area. The village is also near the route of the Thames and Severn Canal and the Thames National Trail.

Kemble airfield on the southern edge of the village is a former RAF airfield. The base was opened in the mid 1930's and grew as a maintainance unit during the second world war. Later the airfirld was home to the RAF Red Arrows aerobatic display team unfortunantely the airfield became a casualty of the Thatcher government and eventually closed in the 1990's. The airfield is now in private ownership and still used for flying.
