About Frampton on Severn:
There are village greens and village greens but few can
beat the one at Frampton, for sheer size and splendour, the green at
Frampton surely remains unbeatable. Surrounded by delightful black and
white half timbered cottages and handsome georgian houses, the village
green at Frampton has three ponds and a cricket ground all within its 22
acres! The Bell Inn, sited close by assures cricketers and supporters
alike of genial company and liquid refreshment following a hard days
play.
Reputed as the birthplace of Jane Clifford, Henry 11's mistress, "Fair
Rosamund" reputedly poisoned by Queen Eleanor in 1177. She is long
remembered in Frampton - the village green is famously known as
Rosamund's Green.
Frampton Court is the most outstanding house on the green, built in the
1730's for Richard Clutterbuck, a Bristol customs official, it is
Palladian in style, and because even if those far off days privacy
mattered, the house is almost entirely screened by trees. The grounds to
Frampton Court are utterly enchanting, a canal in the grounds is
overlooked by an Orangery and graceful Peacocks strut around well
manicured lawns.
In the village, a footpath runs across a water-meadow leading to the
Church of St. Mary and beside it is the Sharpness Canal which links
Gloucester to the River Severn. From this unique vantage point the sight
of small sea-going craft within a few feet of the church tower is an
occasional attraction.
Many farms and lush pastureland surround this ancient village and there
are several hospitable inns in the area - the local towns of stroud and
gloucester are within easy reach, both of which provide a number of
attractions, e.g. river trips, bowling alley, museums, antique shops and
an excellent antique centre. Modern day shopping is taken care of by the
several supermarkets to be found in both local towns.
