About Deerhurst:

Deerhurst is a spacious small village set amid the rich pasturelands of the glorious Gloucestershire countryside. It is a sleepy place where sweet meadows are grazed by sheep and cattle, and here and there, interspersed around the village are remarkably well preserved timber-framed houses and cottages that echo of a by-gone age. The village is but a short distance from the lovely old town of Tewkesbury and, almost boarders with the battlefields where Edward IV defeated the Lancastrians at the Battle of Tewkesbury in 1471.

Close to the village is Odda's chapel. This is of Saxon origin and dated 1056 and until the 19th-century this chapel was part of a farmhouse which had been grafted on to it.

Another treasure of Deerhurst is the parish church of St.Mary. This extremely interesting Saxon church quite possibly once belonged to a former priory and 7th-century origins are evidenced by an apsidal east end. The top of the church tower is medieval with the lower parts being original. The interior of this church is as fascinating as it is serene. It contains an exceptional Saxon font that has intricate carved decoration and inside the nave are the splendid triangular headed windows opening on the tower's east wall. On the west wall is a truly magnificent window dedicated to St.Catherine, she is depicted in a classic 14th-century pose and is holding her wheel. There is an elaborate beauty surrounding this lovely church - it was an unexpected find and a real joy to explore.
