About Ashleworth:
This is a lovely pastoral village set beside the west
bank of the River Severn, in the middle of a typical rural
Gloucestershire landscape.
Visitors here will note colourful cottage gardens, two interesting
village pubs - the Queens Arms and the Boat Inn which over a century or
so ago was a quay-off call for Bargemen, these days the Boat is more
likely to be full of the boating fraternity who sail the waters of the
Severn.
There is little in the way of facilities in the village, save for the
village stores, but compensating for this is the peaceful atmosphere and
the charm of the buildings set beside impressive St. Andrew's Church,
whose spire can be seen as a landmark. The church is surrounded by
graves and tombs of local families, and church registers date back to
1566. Imposing Ashleworth Court dates from the 15th century, this
retains many original features and is now a comfortable bed and
breakfast establishment. At the side of the court is a picturesque Tithe
Barn which has recently undergone restoration work by the National
Trust.
Visitors can enjoy walks in the pleasant rural countryside, but beware,
the village is prone to flooding when the Severn rises through excess
water flowing down from Wales.
Interesting visits from Ashleworth include the market towns of Ledbury,
Tewkesbury and the riverside town of Upton-upon-Severn.
