About Birdlip:
The winding drive up the steeply rising hill to the
ancient village of Birdlip provides magnificent views all around. Once
you reach the vantage point of the summit, the traveller is rewarded
with commanding and spectacular views that extend across the planes of
Gloucestershire to the wild hills of Wales.
Birdlip Hill is a beautiful wooded area, it curves round ancient turf
clad rocky ground to Buckholt Wood and Cooper's Hill. The footpaths
through the woods allow a glimpse of rare wild flowers and plants, cool
forest glades, and the air is filled with the sound of birdsong from the
colonies of birds that inhabit this magical place.
The village lies above the woods and from here the Roman Ermin Way runs
its straight course to Cirencester. Just north of the village is the
Iron Age burial mound at Barrow Wake. It is a delightful village with
some fine properties, some built of mellow Cotswold stone and others of
the timber framed black and white variety. This is a spacious area,
which is seemingly eyrie and mysterious when the mist is swirling all
round. At other times, the air is crystal clear and the summer sun
trickles through the woods covering the turf with it's golden rays and
it is then that you know that your trip to this famous landmark has been
truly worthwhile.
Birdlip is on the Cotswold Way and within easy distance is Prinknash
Abbey and the Rococo gardens at nearby Painswick and you are not far
from 'Cider with Rosie' country - the Slad Valley near Stroud.
